Frequently Asked Questions

ADHD/EF Coaching AP Tutoring

  • ADHD/EF (Executive Functioning) Coaching focuses on the underlying skills that make learning possible, like organization, time management, task initiation, planning, and nontherapeutic emotional regulation. While tutoring targets a specific subject matter such as AP History, ADHD/EF Coaching helps students build the habits and strategies they need to succeed across their classes and responsibilities.

  • No formal diagnosis is required to begin ADHD/EF Coaching. Many students struggle with executive functioning challenges without a formal label. That said, if your child has been evaluated, sharing any IEPs, 504 plans, or neuropsychological reports (especially before we begin) allows Karen to tailor her approach much more precisely and effectively.

  • Sessions are conducted virtually via Zoom and typically last one hour. Karen works collaboratively to identify challenges, set goals, build routines, and practice strategies the student can apply immediately. Sessions are interactive and student-centered, not lectures.

  • Every student is different, but most families notice positive shifts in habits and self-awareness, taking stress out the everyday family life. Meaningful, lasting change typically develops over the course of weeks and months of consistent work. A minimum of three sessions is required so there is enough time to establish a foundation and create a plan for progress.

  • Yes. Parent involvement is always welcome and encouraged. Karen provides briefly weekly check-ins to align goals and strategies, ensuring the work is supported by everyone involved.

  • All sessions are conducted virtually via Zoom, which allows Karen to work with students anywhere in the country.

  • Students meet bi-weekly with Karen, once at the beginning of the week to set up the week and once for a mid-week check in. This schedule provides the greatest support for students.

  • Karen specializes in AP U.S. Government & Politics, AP U.S. History, AP World History, and AP European History. With 26 years of classroom teaching experience in history and social studies, she brings deep subject expertise to every session.

  • Both! Karen offers small group Zoom review sessions closer to the exam date, which is a popular and cost-effective option. Karen also offers individualized one-on-one tutoring for students who want more personalized attention throughout the year.

  • For individualized tutoring, earlier is always better. Starting mid-year allows time to address gaps, build content knowledge, and practice exam skills without pressure. For group review sessions, these are typically offered in the weeks leading up to the May exam date and are designed to consolidate and sharpen what students have already learned.

  • Group review sessions are structured, content-focused, and offered at a special rate and are ideal for students who are generally on track and want a focused review close to exam time. Individual tutoring is fully customized to your student's specific needs, learning style, and areas of weakness, and can begin at any point in the school year.

  • Absolutely, this is a very common situation. Part of what Karen does is help students connect effort to outcomes and build intrinsic motivation beyond test preparation. She meets students where they are and works to make the material engaging and relevant, helping students build skills they can take with them into college.

  • Karen is current with College Board frameworks and deeply familiar with the format, question types, and skills assessed on each exam as both a teacher and an AP Reader for the AP World History exam. Sessions are designed around the actual exam structure, including MCQs - multiple choice, SAQs (short answer), DBQs (document-based questions), LEQs (long essays), and FRQs (free response questions) for AP Gov.

  • Students Karen has worked with have consistently improved their scores and confidence heading into exam day. She is happy to speak to her experience and track record during a free consultation call.
